Meet NHRA Top Fuel driver Audrey Worm from Grantville, PA. She's one of Drag Illustrated's 30 Most Influential People Under 30 and Racechick.com's brand ambassador for March.
Audrey has been drag racing since the age of 16 when she took over driving of her dad's front engine dragster and is currently in her rookie year in the NHRA Mello Yello drag racing series, currently driving the Leverich family Top Fuel Dragster. We have been following her through her rookie year and got a chance to ask her about herself.
How long have you been competitively driving? How and why did you get started?
"I have been driving competitively for nine years. My father started his Slingshot Dragster business building front engine dragsters, and I raced the shop dragster. My father and I have been fans of drag racing for as long as I can remember and I always wanted to drive, so he put me in his car."
Do you remember your first event? What was it and how did you do?
"Early in my driving I just ran the front engine dragster for competitive events. My first competitive event was the NHRA Bowling Green Hot Rod Reunion. I made it as far as the semi finals out of 49 cars in my class."
In addition to racing being a family activity, Audrey has had many pros and mentors in her journey. She goes on to say,
"I wouldn't be here if it weren't for the mentors and friends that I have had along the way and helped tremendously, including Jack Beckman, Antron Brown, Smax Smith, John Hale, Bruce Larson and Robert Hight. Also, a tremendous help is Gary and Bob Leverich and their entire team during licensing and testing passes in the Top Fuel Dragster. Their help is incredibly appreciated and I wouldn't be living my dream of driving a Top Fuel Dragster if it weren't for them. They have been supportive and helpful with knowledge and words of encouragement. This year is going to be an amazing year and I cannot thank them enough for the opportunity they are giving me. This team is a great fit of wonderful hardworking guys and I cannot be prouder to drive for them."
In addition to the Leverich team, she would like to thank Simpson Racing Products and her family, especially her dad John Worm who got her started in the sport.
She was the 2015 Drag Illustrated's #1 voted person (among a field of 5,000+ competitors) for the 30 Most Influential People in Drag Racing under 30. A huge accomplishment voted on by her peers!
